This painting was a wreck when I acquired it. It required so much work that my conservator, Olga Nikolic-Litwin, even featured it as a case study on her website. Look at her progress photos to see how an experienced professional can bring a painting back to life.

Can you identify any of these women?
Donatus Buongiorno painted images of his friends, and he may have hired local people to pose for him in New York, Naples or Solofra, Avellino, all places where he had studios. Do you know any of these people? If so, please contact me. I would love to trace who he knew and how he found his models.
Do you own one of these paintings?
For a catalogue raisonne project, I am interested in hearing from anyone who owns a painting by Donatus Buongiorno.

I came across a painting in my parents house that looks exactly like Old Woman with Shawl

Yours is the third I’m hearing about! I own the one shown here, and I saw another at auction a few years ago. I assume yours is a third, unless your parents bought the one at auction. Do you know how they acquired theirs (or when)?
It wasn’t uncommon for artists to paint more than one of their “best sellers” (and each “counts” as a unique, original painting, by the way), but it surprises me with this one, because I think the woman looks sad, not everybody’s first choice of an image to look at every day on the wall. Is the woman’s expression in your parents painting as sad as in mine? Would you be willing to send me a photo of it?
