Alan got me started buying paintings. I was helpless about dealing with auction houses (just contact them!), nervous about how much to reveal (tell them everything!), and unsure how to close art deals (like any other deals—try to get what you want without being a pest or a pill.)

I highly recommend Alan’s book The Art of Buying Art, and the advice you can find in articles at his website. When you’re done with those, make a list of questions and just hire him.

After a few hours on the phone, you’ll be on your way in the wonderful adventure of collecting art, and you won’t be sorry.
